What are the Key Technologies in Vehicle-to-Everything?

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) is the organic combination of internet and intelligent vehicles. It enables vehicles to connect and exchange data with other vehicles, pedestrians, infrastructure and cloud. By making the invisible visible, V2X is developed to improve road safety and traffic efficiency, and offer users intelligent, comfortable and safe driving experience.


Key Technologies to Enable Vehicle-to-Everything

1. Sensor technology

Sensor technology is the key element to enable Vehicle-to-Everything. Sensors in vehicle acquire and monitor the status of vehicle and condition from surroundings to aid safe driving. Sensors deployed in roadside are used for perception and transmission of road conditions, including traffic volume, driving speed and traffic congestion.


2. Communication technology

To support V2X communication, there are two main technologies: 802.11p and cellular (LTE and soon 5G). The former is a wifi-based short-range communication technology, while the latter is mobile communication technology.


3. Cloud computing and internet

In-vehicle terminal has limited capacity in information processing. Cloud computing is therefore employed to handle massive information occurring in V2X communication. Road condition analysis, large-scale route planning and intelligent traffic scheduling can be done by cloud computing. The essence of Vehicle-to-Everything is the integration of Internet of Things and internet. Only by accessing internet, V2X-related information and services can be obtained.


4. In-vehicle terminal system

Similar to the computer in internet and the mobile phone in mobile internet, the in-vehicle terminal is the medium and the most important element for the driver to acquire the value of V2X technology. However, most in-vehicle infotainment terminal systems at present are neither open nor intelligent, which hinders the V2X development and deployment. More effort should be made to create an open and intelligent in-vehicle terminal system network.


5. Service integration

Service integration is commonly used in internet and mobile internet. In V2X, service integration can be applied to create value-added services and service innovation. For example, the call center service to integrate with car insurance, remote diagnosis to integrate with field service appointment, location to integrate with nearby service.


6. Voice recognition technology

It is unsafe for drivers to use the terminal system during driving by touching the screen. Therefore, the deployment of voice recognition technology is particularly important to boost V2X development.
