Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a combination of cutting-edge information and communication technologies used in transportation and traffic management systems aiming to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability of transportation networks. It is estimated that the deployment of intelligent transportation systems will bring down traffic accidents and traffic congestion by 20 and 60 percent in respective, improve the efficiency of short-distance transportation by 70 percent, double and even triple the throughput capacity of existing road network.
The connection and information exchange between vehicles and roads is fundamental to intelligent transportation systems. 5G technology is considered the key technology to support transportation intelligence, enabling low latency, high reliability and high data rate communication in autonomous driving as well as seamless cooperation and connection among people, vehicles, infrastructure and cloud.
In the context of 5G commercialization at present days, the global ITS industry is undergoing rapid development and transformation. Unprecedented enthusiasm for V2X deployment is being witness by the whole industry. However, problems occur in the V2X pilot project boom.
Deployment V.S. operation. In the deployment of most V2X test fields and demonstration areas, operation scenarios are often taken insufficient account, which results in huge investment loss;
Demonstration V.S. commercialization. Most V2X applications are still at the demonstration stages. Ordinary citizens cannot enjoy the benefits of these V2X applications, since Large-scale commercialization still has a long way to go;
Function V.S. platform. Undue importance is being attached to function development while little consideration is given to the systematic development of business platform, which hinders the formation of a healthy ITS ecosystem.
